At the beginning of the year, the children followed the democratic process of electing their school leaders. Children expressed their interest in various roles within the school and produced a supporting statement as to why they would be suitable for the position. The staff and children then voted for the student who they believed would best suit the role. Year 6 would like to introduce this year's head boy and head girl.

Year 6 have been exceptionally grateful for their brand new ipads. The iPads have enhanced their learning across all areas of the curriculum. It has been particularly effective when children used iPads to research soldiers from Stoke-On-Trent who had fought in WW1. They used ancestry to find out the jobs, age, and families of real soldiers.

This term, year 6 began a variety of fascinating topics. They studied a short film topic in English called ‘The Present’, learnt all about Classification of living things in science and started to understand more about World War 1 in History. They thoroughly enjoyed celebrating poetry week by comparing and performing WW1 poetry such as ‘Flanders fields,’ John McCrae and ‘Who’s for the Game’ by Jessie Pope.

As part of their history topic, the children had the opportunity to explore ‘The longest yarn’. This was an exhibition with scenes from WW1 made from wool. The children and staff were really impressed by the creation. Year 6 were also inspired towards their own art project. In art, with the influence of Anthony Gormley, year 6 created WW1 sculptures from clay. This included a variety of designs such as: poppies, soldiers, and memorials. They researched, designed and evaluated their wonderful creations. The children absolutely loved the VR experience in Autumn 2. They experienced life in the trenches, no man's land and the battlefield. Moreover, they got to take a little trip into space too.

The children thoroughly enjoyed their trip to Staffordshire Regiment Museum. Their behaviour was impeccable and their eagerness to learn made this trip valuable and unforgettable. The interactive experience of trenches, opportunities to handle WW1 artifacts and storytelling delivered by the museum volunteers enabled an immersive experience that has greatly enhanced the children’s learning.
