Welcome to the
Butterflies and Ladybirds

Year 1 Teachers - Mrs Harrington, Mrs Martin, Mrs Hales

Support Staff - Miss Wood, Mrs Khan

Learning at Home
We expect all children to read their reading book at home at least three times a week to support their learning.

Each year group will also have six 'Teach Your Parent' activities per term linked to their wider curriculum learning. These are to enrich your child's wider knowledge and support you with further learning at home and are optional to complete.

In addition to this we will also send home links to your child's Read Write Inc phonics sessions. This will support you in helping your child to practice their reading skills at home. How to read with your child.

Year 1 have had an exciting and action-packed term, filled with curiosity, creativity, and hands‑on learning.

Our history topic, The Great Fire of London, has really captured the children’s imaginations. A highlight was our fantastic trip to Ford Green Hall, where the children explored what life was like in the past. Their behaviour was exceptional throughout the day, and they represented the school brilliantly. It was a memorable experience enjoyed by all. We ended our topic by recreating the Great Fire of London by making our own houses which Mrs Martin then set fire to during Forest Schools.

The Ladybirds Class also shone this term with their wonderful class assembly all about animals. They impressed everyone with their confidence, knowledge, and singing.

In science, the children have been learning about animals and their habitats. This learning has been brought to life when we had a visit from the Animal Man and Mrs Martin’s tortoise Dash. This learning also continued into Forest Schools, where the children have been busy designing and building their very own birds’ nests using natural materials. Their teamwork, problem-solving, and creativity have been fantastic to see.

This term in PSHE, the children enjoyed a special visit from our local PCSO. They learned all about how to stay safe and the different ways the police help our community. The children asked thoughtful questions and were thrilled to have the chance to sit in the police car.

As part of Mental Health Week, we explored the idea of feeling safe and talked about what we can do when we feel worried. The children shared their ideas with great maturity and showed a strong understanding of how to look after their wellbeing.

In RE, we have been learning about Judaism and what it means to be Jewish. The children explored a range of Jewish artefacts, helping them to understand how Jewish people celebrate and practise their faith. We also looked at several parables, focusing on the theme of forgiveness. The children reflected on times when they may have needed to say sorry and how it feels to be forgiven, showing empathy and thoughtful insight.

It has been a term full of discovery and achievement, and we are incredibly proud of all the children. We can’t wait to see what next term brings!
