Year 6

Welcome to the
Hedgehogs and Kingfishers

Year 6 Teachers - Mr Darlington & Miss Lomas

Support Staff - Mrs Parkinson, Mrs Wildsmith & Mrs Bentley

Learning at Home
We expect all children to read their reading book at home at least three times a week to support their learning. Children should also access their 'TT Rockstars' for at least 15 minutes three times a week.

Each year group will also have six 'Teach Your Parent' activities per term linked to their wider curriculum learning. These are to enrich your child's wider knowledge and support you with further learning at home and are optional to complete.

Stanley Head

At the start of the spring term, Year 6 went on their residential visit to Stanley Head. They experienced activities such as archery, crate stacking and the high ropes whilst learning skills that will last a lifetime. Their attitude and demonstration of our core SPARKLE values was outstanding, and they represented the school brilliantly.

Heart Dissection

As part of our Science topic of the circulatory system, the Year 6 pupils got a real, hands-on experience of the structure of a heart. This heart dissection really brought the topic to life and it allowed the children to apply their learning.  The instructor from Hands On Science was wowed with the children’s knowledge of the subject and their application.

Forest Schools

Year 6 have loved their time in Forest School. They have carried out a range of activities, used tools and learnt techniques such as whittling to create some amazing pieces. Children have learnt about sustainability and helped to regenerate areas of the school to help the local wildlife.

Royal Shakespeare – A Midsummer Night’s Dream

In English, we looked at Shakespeare's ‘A Midsummer Night's dream’. Through lots of drama activities, all children loved exploring the play and the connections between all the characters. This led to some fantastic writing including a setting description, a soliloquy and an argument.

Science Week

During Science Week, Year 6 were set the task to promote curiosity in an experiment involving paper aeroplanes. The children, created their own experiments, deciding what they wanted to explore. They predicted and recorded their data using Keynote then wrote a conclusion stating what they found out. Children certain Enjoyed and Explored this topic!
