Year 1

Welcome to the
Butterflies and Ladybirds

Year 1 Teachers - Mrs Harrington, Mrs Martin, Mrs Hales

Support Staff - Miss Wood, Mrs Khan

Learning at Home
We expect all children to read their reading book at home at least three times a week to support their learning.

Each year group will also have six 'Teach Your Parent' activities per term linked to their wider curriculum learning. These are to enrich your child's wider knowledge and support you with further learning at home and are optional to complete.

In addition to this we will also send home links to your child's Read Write Inc phonics sessions. This will support you in helping your child to practice their reading skills at home. How to read with your child.

What a fantastic half term it has been in Year 1! The children have truly flourished and have worked exceptionally hard, especially in their phonics lessons. We are incredibly proud of every single child and the wonderful progress they have made with their reading skills. Their enthusiasm, determination, and growing confidence have been a joy to see, and it has been wonderful to watch them develop into more independent readers each week.

In Art this half term, the children have been learning about the Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. They explored her fascinating life and discovered how she uses bold colours and repeating polka dot patterns in her artwork. Inspired by her unique style, the children experimented with colour and design before creating their own beautiful masterpieces using polka dots. We are incredibly proud of their creativity, enthusiasm, and the wonderful artwork they have produced.

In Design and Technology this half term, the children explored healthy eating before tasting a variety of fruits to help them decide which flavours they enjoyed. Using their favourite combinations, they designed their own fruit milkshakes and then worked together in groups to make their recipes. The children showed excellent teamwork and were excited to create their own drinks. Although the feedback on the finished milkshakes was mixed, we were incredibly proud of every child for trying their creations and showing a willingness to taste something they had made themselves.

Year 1 had a fantastic time taking part in Sports Day this term. The children showed great enthusiasm, determination and teamwork as they competed in a range of exciting events. We were incredibly proud of the way they encouraged one another and demonstrated our school values throughout the day. A huge thank you to all the parents, carers and family members who came along to support and cheer on the children – your encouragement helped make the day extra special!

We have loved making memories with our Year 1 children this year. Many have demonstrated our sparkle values throughout the year, and we are incredibly proud of the journey they have been on. They have grown in confidence, shown kindness and resilience, and embraced each new challenge with enthusiasm. We wish them all the best for year 2.
