Year 5

Welcome to the
Swans and Kestrels

Year 5 Teachers - Miss Khalid, Mrs Stubbs, Mrs Laidlaw

Support Staff - Mrs Mault, Miss Finnemore & Mrs Begum

Learning at Home
We expect all children to read their reading book at home at least three times a week to support their learning. Children should also access their 'TT Rockstars' for at least 15 minutes three times a week.

Each year group will also have six 'Teach Your Parent' activities per term linked to their wider curriculum learning. These are to enrich your child's wider knowledge and support you with further learning at home and are optional to complete.

Royal Shakespeare – A Midsummer Night’s Dream - Swans Class Assembly

During the Spring Term, we have been studying the works of Shakespeare as part of a project working with the Royal Shakespeare Company. This year, the whole school have worked on A Midsummer Night’s Dream with Year 5 writing soliloquies, setting descriptions and arguments in role. In February, Year 5 Swans invited parents to watch them share their learning.

Olaf the Viking

As part of our Vikings topic in History, we had a visit from Olaf the Viking! He taught us all about his life, including the food he eats, where he lives, and the game he played as a child. He also taught us about Viking battles: how to hold a shield and create a defensive shield wall!

Orienteering Club

Years 5 and 6 have had the opportunity to help set up and take part in an Orienteering Club this Term, including designing and setting up checkpoints and racing to complete the various challenges. We even had a special trail for World Book Day, collecting authors and titles from some of our favourite books. Teamwork and resilience have been developed and tested throughout!

World Book Day

Y5 took part in the ‘Footy and Booky Quiz’ with the National Literacy Trust, competing with schools across the country to answer questions about football and books. We loved seeing some of our favourite authors, including Micheal Rosen, and football stars.

Reading Breakfast

To help celebrate World Book Day, we invited our families in to join us for breakfast and enjoy some time sharing books. It was so lovely to see everyone reading and discussing!

Watch Me Learn

Thank you to all the parents who came to support our Watch Me Learn lessons this term. We loved sharing our Science and DT lessons with you!

Curriculum

We have continued with our exciting curriculum – this term we have been learning about abstract art and how to design and build a strong bridge using reinforced joins.

When we create abstract art, we get to use our imagination in lots of different ways. We don’t have to make our picture look like something real - we can just explore colours, shapes, and patterns; we have so much fun doing so.

Forest Schools

This term, Year 5 have had the opportunity to explore forest schools. We have made bird feeders (creating using lard and acorns), learned how to knot in five different ways and created our own ‘Tree Goblin’, inspired by our English unit, Midsummers Night’s Dream. We absolutely love taking part in Forest Schools as this type of learning is active, sensory-rich, encourages teamwork!

Sport4All Festival at Excel Academy

We took a small team of Y5 and Y6 pupils to the Excel Academy to take part in a sport festival, where we were able to try out a circuit of activities based around the Paralympics. These included New Age Kurling, Boccia and Adapted Athletics. Pupils showed amazing teamwork, resilience and respect throughout the afternoon!

Year 5 Visit to City Central Library

In March, Year 5 visited the City Central Library in Hanley. The librarian shared a story with the children, and they had the opportunity to use the library and choose a book. She spoke to them about the new Stoke 100 Reads. The library is free to use and there are no fines for late books for children.

Year 5 End of Year Expectations

This leaflet shows the overview of what your child is expected to learn by the end of their current year group. These are the minimum requirements to ensure continued progress through the following years.
